The Beta Band - Assessment

Published by A Bowl Of Stupid at 10:06 am under Music, Arts & Entertainment

I've posted a video from The Beta Band previously, but I think it's time for another since this was probably one of the most over-talented, yet totally unappreciated, British bands to have come out in the past 10 years. As noted by Wikipedia, The Beta Band was a British group that received much critical acclaim and achieved cult status, but unfortunately failed to make much of a commercial impact on the popular music scene.

"Assessment" was the lead single off of their final 2004 album, "Heroes to Zeros." While not my favorite Beta Band tune (which would be "Brokenupadingdong" from the "Igby Goes Down" Soundtrack), this is still a great song nonetheless. Moreover, I find the song's lyrics particularly appropriate given the subject matter of my posts this week:

I think I cracked my skull on the way down
I think I lost my head when I lay down
The fear of facts presented in the cold light of day

And when I step back from all this I see that I'm fighting
I can't help myself, there's no reason for lying
Truth and fiction they all become one
Help me from the sea to the beach to the land

[…] Regardless, there were some really great bands that the airline had found which I had not otherwise heard of, including this solo project led by Steve Mason, the lead singer of one of my favorite bands, the now-defunct Scottish group The Beta Band. Although the debut album Black Gold was released less than a year ago (on 15 May 2006), Mason is already working under the new name of Black Affair. […]
