Kate, the bigger one beneath the 9 spires is old Tibetian Sanscrit -- it's a Buddhist meditative prayer mantra stating: "Om Mani Padme Hum".

To avoid butchering it, a definition can be found here:

<a href="http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_Om_Mani_Padme_Hung_mean rel="nofollow">http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_does_Om_Mani_Padme_Hung_mean</a>

Stephen, umm ... crap, I didn't even think about the tissue being used (you're right, I forgot they just have a roll of TP on te ground). As for the inks, I'm sure you're right, but I'm not sure -- I only saw one type of ink and was just told it was the standard 'snake venom' type. But who the fuck knows at this point, yah?

hey guys,
don't get me wrong, i love and respect Wat Bang Prah and have been getting tattooed there for years. maybe they have begun sterilizing the needles. good for them i hope they do. please keep in mind though that sanitation isn't only about the rods used. they also clean off the tattoo using pieces of toilet paper that's been sitting on the ground next to all sorts of grime. maybe that's changed, i don't know as it's been about two years since i've been there. also, i don't remember any anti-biotic being used after the the tattooing is finished. as for the snake venom are you sure they used the snake venom ink? because different yants use different ink. some call for bear bladder bile. some call for the oil from the chin of a corps. i've even heard of battery acid being used.
by the way and just a side note (keep in mind i have many sak yant pieces as i like the aesthetic not the "magic"), the Buddha said "if you ever encounter someone trying to work a miracle, you will know they are NOT my disciple". he strongly discouraged the use of magic and ritual.
much metta to you all,
stephen

Hey, those are in Cambodian characters? Why are Thais using Cambodian characters and not their own when doing these tattoos?

UPDATE: I just did some research and realize Thai culture and language is based off Cambodians. That explains everything.

Stephen, sorry mate, but I gotta go with Sam on this one. When I was there recently, they did indeed use alcohol and fire to at least attempt to sterilize the stuff. B'sides, they also use snake venom, and what could be safer than THAT?

Stephen Z, I must humbly disagree with you. The needles are soaking in alcohol (iso not etho) and many times a flame is used before it is used at all. I have recieved yants from WBP and have seen this done many, many times. Not once was this not done in my times there.

as for sanitary issues, i've received 4 tattoos at different times at Wat Bang Prha. The last one gave me a nasty infection that still itches from time to time even a year and a half later. They do not sterilize anything believing that no harm could ever come from these tattoos....although there is a sign on the wall saying "No Aids".

Dud,

Didn't you hear the news, Angelina Jolie accidentally drowned in a lake in Provence. Her and Brad and the kids went to France so she could give birth to the twins. The twins survived cause they were not tatooed. She was I.D'd by the French local authorities by her lips and those tatoo's.

Best of luck with the new tatoo. In an effort to preserve my karma, I retract the statement above. The tatoo really is a beauty.

That is a beautiful tattoo. All you inky people are making me fall in love with crazy body art.

And hopefully you don't have to worry about the killer communists since you're not a cop.

Love it. It's gorgeous, and when they have to amputate your head because of the tetanus, it'll be even better.

I kid of course (I hope anyway). Seriously, that's pretty damn amazing.
